OzISP Spam Filter
What is Spam?
"Spam" describes the increasing amount of unsolicited and time
consuming email sent to users. These messages are commonly commercial,
promoting products or services, and containing content which
can be offensive. OzISP recognises that users need assistance
to erradicate spam from their systems, and our Spam Filter provides
an easy and effective solution.
Here are some simple things you can do to minimise the amount
of spam you receive.
· Keep your Email Address confidential. You may also
want to create multiple emails to better manage your important
messages.
· Be careful about where you submit your email address,
and always ensure you read the Privacy Statements and Terms
and Conditions usually provided by websites. These should tell
you how your address will be used.
· Do not reply to spam messages, even if they offer to
remove you from their mailing list. Doing so only confirms that
yours is a valid address, allowing the sender to continue sending
you unwanted material and trading your address with other spammers.
· Preferrably choose a unique username for your address.
This makes it more difficult for spammers scanning the web to
find yours.
· Do not post your email address online - this allows
spammers who scan the web for email addresses to obtain your
address easily.
While these measures can minimise spam, we recommend you use
a filtering program such as OzISP's Spam Filter, a comprehensive
system which allows you to better manage your email and minimise
the spam which is directed to your address.
OzISP's customisable Spam Filter provides an easy and effective
way to eliminate spam from your Inbox, and minimise the amount
of spam which is allowed to reach you. Working in conjunction
with common Email Clients like Microsoft Outlook, Outlook Express,
Eudora or our own Webmail facility, OzISP's system scans your
incoming email for offensive and unwanted content. Well known
spam detection techniques and content rules are used, and these
are tailored to your chosen settings , which you can change
at any time online. OzISP supports existing "Blacklists", i.e
known sites which send spam, and you can enter any known addresses
which you do not wish to receive messages from, when you choose
your security settings.
Managing and ridding your system of spam will become easy. All
incoming mail which our system has classified spam will be clearly
identified, allowing you to instantly recognise spam messages,
and view or delete them as you wish. Alternatively, you can
have these messages diverted directly to a special folder

· OzISP's Spam Filter is fully maintained, meaning no
ongoing work for you.
· There is no software to install. Our Spam Filter works

Instructions
Choose the level of security you want to filter your email.
OzISP's customisable security settings run on a scale of 1-10.
Setting your preference to 1 will mean that most messages will
be allowed to pass to your Inbox without detection. A higher
setting will detect most of the spam sent to you, but the risk
of legitimate Email being mistakenly detected as spam will increase.
OzISP's Spam Filter analyses the content of incoming messages
for spam using a number of criteria. Each characteristic of
the message analysed by the Spam Filter attracts a number rating,
and these ratings are totalled to give a result of 1-10. A higher
number indicates that the Email contains more of the characteristics
defining it as spam.
Features analysed by the OzISP Spam Filter include:
· Whether or not the message has been forwarded to you,
or sent directly.
· Whether any links are contained in the message. These
links may commonly invite you to visit a website for information
regarding the products or offers being advertised.
· The overall size of the message, and whether it contains
large images.
· Particular words contained in the text of the message
or the Subject line which may indicate that the message is spam.
The rating given by the Spam Filter works in conjunction with
the 1-10 setting you choose, only in reverse order. This means
that where you choose the strictest security rating of 10, the
Spam Filter requires only a rating of 1 point to classify the
incoming message as spam. As a result you need to be careful
in deciding what security level you want, because higher settings
may result in legitimate Email being detected as spam.
OzISP also advises that you check your mail regularly to ensure
that you do not mistakenly delete legitimate messages . You
can also help to prevent this by entering known addresses which
you want the Spam Filter to automatically approve messages from
in the "Whitelist" when confirming your settings.
OzISP's Spam Filter also functions in conjunction with your
Email client, for example, Microsoft Outlook, Outlook Express
or Eudora. The incoming message settings in these programs can
be used to train your Email client to recognise messages which
the Spam Filter has detected as spam, and deal with them as
you direct it.
Once you have selected your security preferences, click "Turn
On". This confirms your settings and activates the Spam Filter.
